Sony rolls out Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update for Xperia Z, ZL, ZR and Tablet Z

Android 4.3 Jelly Bean isn’t the newest version of Google’s mobile operating system; in fact, it’s several iterations old at this point. Even still, Sony is making sure that owners of some of its older devices are getting updated to Jelly Bean sooner than later. As of today,  some owners of the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR and or an Xperia Tablet Z should start to see an alert for the update.
That doesn’t apply to everyone, since timing for specific carriers and regions will vary. In the U.S., for example, the Xperia Z will first need T-Mobile’s approval before it begins to roll out to those customers. Still, there are a few noteworthy changes worth discussing.

Android 4.3 includes enhancements thanks to Google’s “Project Butter,” so everything should run more smoothly. The update also includes Sony’s Smart Social Camera that enables the use of apps inside the camera viewfinder. Sony’s Messaging, MyXperia, Smart Connect, Small apps, TrackID and Sony Select apps are all getting a remake, while the company’s media apps such as WALKMAN, Album and Movies all now support cloud integration. Other features include security enhancements, new Xperia themes and battery life tweaks.
Unlocked versions of these devices will likely get the update first, and we’ll keep you in the loop if carriers start to announce their own roll-outs.
