We first heard about LG's G Flex back in late October when the company unveiled the device in Korea. This week, it's the USA's turn. LG held an exclusive event in California yesterday where journalists could get a little one-on-one time with the flexible phone. Because this isn't just any old smartphone, the hands on it were a bit different. LG showed off the phone as well as some of its components. This includes the flexible display as well as the flexible battery, which actually isn't removable. LAPTOP reports that the device can be flexed up to 100 times with as much as 88 pounds of pressure.
LG also demonstrated the self-healing back and explained a bit more about the technology behind the scratch resistant casing. Thanks to a molecular substructure that rests on top of the plastic coating and pushes back against the scratch, popping it out, the phone is capable of "healing" minor scratches and scuffs. This process depends on temperature, with the molecules responding faster in warmer environments. The device also can't recover from deep scratches. The G Flex packs a 6-inch 720p POLED display, and is based on a quad-core 2.2 GHz Snapdragon 800 SoC, 2 GB of RAM, and 32 GB of integrated storage. The flexible battery is 3,500 mAh.
Unfortunately, LG didn't shed any light on carriers or release details for the phone, so we still don't know when this one is going to get an official U.S. launch.
