Samsung seems to be popping up everywhere as they continue to spread their company’s footprint across the globe. It was only six months ago
that they opened up their SERI (Samsung Electronics Research Institute)
in Finland of all places – it wasn’t bad enough that they outsold
hometown favorite, Nokia, but then they moved in on their turf. It now
looks like its Canada’s turn to enjoy a little Samsung “loving,” as they
recently announced
that they would open their first Canadian Research and Development
Centre in Vancouver, British Columbia. This new facility will focus
strictly on Samsung’s Enterprise Security Solutions. President and CEO
Canada, HT Kim said:
“Our new Canadian Samsung R&D
facility is creating jobs in British Columbia, a hub for technology
innovation. With a skilled Canadian talent base to draw from, the team
will help Samsung continue to lead the industry – both at home and
abroad – by driving product innovation.”
One could translate
that to read, “All current and former BlackBerry employees, please feel
free to apply for a job with us.” One might wonder why Samsung would
want to tap into the pool of BlackBerry talent, but Samsung knows that
as the smartphone market becomes more and more saturated, the two areas
left to focus on expansion are the billions of potential customers in
the emerging nations and the business enterprise market. BlackBerry was
so instilled with security and the trust of businesses, and Samsung
really wants to tap into that market – what better way to “tap” than
with former BlackBerry employees and their knowledge.
You must
also remember that, unlike BlackBerry, that sold only phones, Samsung
also sells laptops, tablets, servers, and many other mobile and
stationary equipment that businesses use. If Samsung can open a crack in
that elusive enterprise door and get their foot in, Samsung may see
long-term growth in the enterprise field.
Right now there are
about 60 “skilled software engineers, designers, and operations staff,”
working in the Canadian facility, but Samsung expects that number to
grow as does Samsung’s Enterprise Security Solutions. As usual, Canada
is grateful for the business growth in their country and this was
emphasized when Christy Clark, Premier of British Columbia said:
“We
welcome Samsung’s investment in B.C., and interest in Vancouver.
Companies like Samsung are investing here because they recognize the
advantages. A highly-educated talent pool, competitive tax policies, a
business-friendly climate and AAA credit rating speak for themselves.”
