The firmware update with the new KOT49H build is available
for all the latest Nexus devices, including the Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus
10, and the 2012 and 2013 Nexus 7 tablets. The updates are rolling out
over the air, so for users that are yet to receive the OTA update on
their devices, they can install the new firmware by performing a manual
upgrade.
Here is a step-by-step guide to install the updated firmware on the Nexus 5. But, before trying out the manual installation procedure, there are some vital aspects to keep in mind:
- Ensure that you have proper data backup.
- The device should be fully charged.
- The USB drivers for the device must be installed on the computer. [Download]
- Enable USB Debugging.
- The Nexus 5 needs to be running on either Android 4.4.1 KOT49E or Android 4.4 KRT16M (not rooted), which are the previous official updates.
NOTE: International Business Times will not be responsible for anything that goes wrong. Users should proceed at their own risk.
Tutorial
Step 1: Download Android 4.4.2 KitKat for the Nexus 5 to your computer.
- For Android 4.4.1 KOT49E users.

Step 2: Connect the Nexus 5 to your computer using USB cable.
Step 3: Copy the update.zip package onto your SD card.
Step 4: Turn off the device.
Step 5: Get into the bootloader mode by holding down volume up, volume down and power on the device until you see the Fastboot menu and START on top.
Step 6: Navigate to "Recovery mode" by using the volume up and down keys, and then press the power button to select it.
Step 7: Once you see an exclamation mark, hold down the power button, quickly followed by the volume up button. It will bring up the Recovery Mode menu.
