Intel Chairman Says Company Had Lost Its Way

Intel chairman Andy Bryant recently admitted that the company is currently paying the price of not jumping into the tablet and mobile device bandwagon in time, seemingly echoing a similar admittance by Microsoft. He said the data was there to see the shift from desktop to mobile, but Intel simply missed it.

Bryant also admitted his embarrassment over the fact that Intel seemed to have lost its way. But now Intel has a new CEO, Brian Krzanich, who looks at the world as it is, not as how Intel wishes it would be. "His impact on strategies is starting to be felt," Bryant said during a day-long investor meeting at the company's Silicon Valley headquarters.

Krzanich chimed in, saying that Intel's technology can be used in all form factors, from the biggest servers to the desktop to the tablet to the smartphone to even smaller devices. In fact, the company has even opened its doors to manufacturing ARM-based designs.

"The PC market is beginning to see signs of stabilization," Krzanich said. He noted that although there's still a decline in the PC sector, the decline is actually slowing. What Intel needs to watch, he said, is the emerging market. Currently, Intel sees big money in the data center market, predicting a continued growth of 15 percent through 2016.

On the smartphone front, he pointed to a few design wins, despite the company's struggles, and said 2013 was the year of establishing its footprint. The company also seeks to more than quadruple its tablet business in 2014 by pushing over 40 million units.
"We've got to have that footprint," Krzanich said. "We've got to have that scale."

Paul Walker Dead at 40: Photos from Crash Posted on TMZ

The holiday weekend was brought to a chilling and grinding halt when it wash announced that actor Paul Walker had died in a fiery car crash in Santa Clarita on Saturday. The Fast and Furious star was only 40 years old when the car he was traveling in crashed, killing the actor and his friend who it has been confirmed was driving the car.

Walker’s reps posted a statement on the actor’s death, explaining the tragedy and giving details on the crash that killed the actor who was respected and loved by so many, and his friend. TMZ posted pictures of the crash on their website and other photos leaked their way onto social media.
Here’s the photo that TMZ posted:

Other photos from the crash were posted on Twitter, but out of respect to Walker and his family, we won’t be posting them here.  Frankly, there’s no reason to want to see the crash photos at all, seeing as two human beings died in the wreck and were taken from their families far too soon. Unlike the movies Walker has starred in, this car crash is very real and the actor’s death is a reminder of how painful it can be when real life is effected by the myth of movies.
Walker was just 40 years old and leaves behind a family, and the photo posted isn’t meant to exploit his death or make it seem like a stunt from a movie. Rather it serves as a heartbreaking reminder that none of us are immortal and even the brightest of stars can be taken from us in the most tragic and painful of ways.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Walker, his family and friends during this incredibly trying and tragic time.

Reports Says Nokia Now Dominates 90 Percent of the Windows Phone Market

The latest Windows Phone stats from AdDuplex are out, demonstrating just how tight Nokia’s grip on the mobile platform has become. With Microsoft set to take over the Finnish company’s mobile division, the Lumia-maker currently manufacturers 90 percent of all Windows Phone 8 devices, up from 85.4 percent just a few month ago in July.

With Microsoft reportedly preparing to produce its own smartphone hardware and software starting next year, the few other companies still working with Windows Phone have clearly scaled back their investment. In second place behind Nokia, HTC’s Windows Phone 8 market share dropped from 11.5 percent to 7 percent as the company put its focus entirely on Android devices. Meanwhile, even Samsung dropped from 2 percent earlier this year to just 1.8 percent of the Windows Phone market.
AdDuplex’s report goes on to detail the most popular Windows Phone devices in each country, revealing that once again the entry-level Lumia 520 (or in the U.S. the identical Lumia 521) is the most popular choice in most regions—though that may change with the introduction of the follow-up Lumia 525. The survey, which was completed in one day on Nov. 22, also reveals that over 75 percent of Windows Phones are currently running WP8, up from 61 percent in July.

Moto G to Arrive on Amazon, Starts at $179 and Ships Dec 4 2013

Motorola recently opened up pre-orders for the Moto G in the United States, and now Amazon is also listing the phone. While Motorola will ship the device starting on December 2, Amazon will also sell the phone and will ship it two days later on December 4.

The phone will offer Android 4.3 Jelly Bean out of the box, though Motorola has promised an update for the phone will arrive around January. The device will be available with 8GB and 16GB of storage for $179 and $199, respectively, and Amazon Prime members can take advantage of free shipping. Right now we don’t see any of Motorola’s Moto G accessories available, however, so you’ll be stuck with the black back.

As a reminder, the Moto G is unlocked and the major benefit is that you won’t be tied down to a contract. It’s equipped with a dual-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz and features a 5-megapixel camera, so it certainly doesn’t offer the best specs on the market, especially without 4G LTE support, but at its price it’s hard to pass up.

iPhone 6 3D sensing and refocusable camera rumors

There are always plenty of rumors regarding upcoming Apple devices and the iPhone 6 is already grabbing its fair of leaks and speculation. Two further possibilities that have been raised recently are an iPhone 6 refocusable camera and 3D sensing.

Most of the iPhone 6 specs and features that we’ve already heard rumored or leaked are about the display, with a larger display, sapphire glass use and the possibility of a curved display all being potential additions to the next premium iPhone. Sometimes patents can hint at ideas of what could come to future devices, and news of a Lytro-like camera is one of these examples.
A new patent has just been awarded to Apple that would enable users of a device to refocus camera images after a shot is taken with the use of a microlens adapter. The patent for a refocusable imaging mode adapter also mentions that this could be used in portable devices.

Of course that raises the suggestion that this could come to the iPhone 6, and it would be a welcome addition to the many iPhone users who enjoy smartphone photography. The patent is pretty complex but revolves around a plenoptic camera, aka a light-field camera.
Although it’s not yet known if this will be used in the iPhone 6 or in devices further down the lines, plenty of reports have picked up on the prospect of this development for the next iPhone. To see much more on the technicalities behind this idea check out Apple Insider.
Another rumor is about 3D vision coming to the iPhone 6. Back in the summer we told how Apple was in a bid to purchase PrimeSense, an Israeli company specializing in 3D sensors. This kind of technology could be used in many ways and we noted that it would be interesting to see what happened if the deal went through.

This week it was reported that the acquisition has finally been completed and The Huffington Post reported that this could potentially lead to the iPhone 6 having 3D vision. The sensors that PrimeSense produces are used for people to interact with devices, and this has led to many suggestions of how the Apple could use this technology.
Although it seemed more likely at first that this would be used in an Apple television product, it now appears that the technology has evolved so that it could be used in much smaller devices such as the next iPhone. One of the ideas for how it could be used is that the device could calculate the size and possibly the mass of an object, simply from a picture.

Both the refocusable camera and 3D sensing capabilities are intriguing prospects for an iPhone, but whether they will come to the iPhone 6 is not yet known. The prospect is pretty mouthwatering, although the costs involved could well lead to a higher price point.

iPhone 5s & 5c Account for over 75% of Smartphone Sales in Japan

People thought the iPhone was going to have trouble breaking into Japan. Apple has proven them all wrong now that the entire country is smitten with the device, and with the support of the largest provider, NTT DoCoMo, there is no telling how much bigger it can get.

According to a Twitter post from KWP Com_Tech Japan, 76 percent of smartphones sold in the month of October were either an iPhone 5s or an iPhone 5c. Although it was already popular from SoftBank and KDDI au, this surge in marketshare has been largely in thanks to NTT DoCoMo finally supporting the phone.

As Japan’s largest provider with over 63 million customers worldwide, NTT DoCoMo had the clout to hold out on the iPhone for this long, mostly due to Apple refusing pre-installed software on it.
The iPhone proved too popular, and its rivals had been gaining too much traction, with DoCoMo losing 68,000 subscribers in a single month. Once it finally came around, it promised that 40 percent of the new contracts it sold would come be done so with an iPhone. Set backs aside, it seems that NTT DoComo has clearly held up its end of the bargain, which accounted for 61 percent of the 76 percent total in October.
We’ve come full circle, and now that Japan’s largest phone company supports the most popular phone, it’s time to see how many of those who fled will come crawling on back.
