iOS 7 Adoption Tops 70 Percent After 2 Months Chikita Reports

Two months after its release, Apple's iOS 7 is now running on more than 70 percent of iOS devices in North America, according to new data from online ad network Chitika.
"This makes it very likely that iOS 7 will continue to substantially outpace iOS 6 adoption, which reached 83 percent close to six months following its release in September 2012," the company wrote in its report.
The quick pace of iOS 7 adoption has already broken records. Just 24 hours after it was publicly released on Sept. 18, the new mobile operating system was running on more than 18 percent of North American iOS devices, beating out iOS 6, which was installed on 14.8 percent of devices after its first day of availability. After its first week, iOS 7 made up more than half of all iOS-based Web traffic in North America.

 
 
Breaking it down by device, iPhone users are "slightly more likely" to have adopted iOS 7 compared to iPad users — 74 percent versus 64 percent, Chitika found. At this point, close to 9 percent of iPads are still running the older iOS 5, compared to less than 3 percent of iPhones.
"The slightly lower adoption rate of iOS 7 is likely least partially due to features like AirDrop not coming to the iPad 2 or 3, minimizing the incentive for users of those devices to upgrade," Chitika said.
To quantify iOS version distribution by Apple device, Chitika examined a sample of about 300 million U.S. and Canadian impressions on its network from Oct. 25 to Nov. 18.
"The latest analysis again underscores that iPhone users, and iPad users to a lesser extent, update at extremely high rates," Chitika said. "While still-active legacy devices make it unlikely for iOS 7 adoption to substantially surpass the nearly 90 percent adoption rate of iOS 6, the latest operating system will likely reach that point in a much quicker timeframe than its forerunner."
Meanwhile, according to stats released by Google this week, about 54.5 percent of Android devices are currently running Jelly Bean, while 18.6 percent are on Ice Cream Sandwich and 24.1 percent are on Gingerbread. Only about 1.1 percent are on KitKat, which arrived last month on the Nexus 5.
