With 2013 coming to a close, it’s time for all of those “best of 2013″, “best of the year” posts, TV shows and all the rest that will be flying around the media this December. Google is getting on the act and asking users to vote for their favorite apps and games in what they’re calling the “Players’ Choice Awards”. There’s not that many categories but, Google has managed to keep things pretty fun here and the emphasis is more on the apps and games you like, rather than rigorously categorizing them accordingly. Apps and Games have become the key parts of our experience when it comes to smartphones and 2013 has seen some pretty high-profile launches on Android, like the Any.DO to-do list app and more recently, the VSCO Cam app.
Google have clearly hit on some emerging trends this year, especially asking for votes on games based on movies. Some of the biggest cinema releases have been graced with Android games this year, such as Man of Steel and the latest Batman movie. We’ll forgive Google the self-promotion with the category devoted to Google after all, with folks like Samsung looking to replace Google services – for some bizarre reason – a little love for Google apps can’t hurt.
This year, Google Play has gotten better and better, not only pushing apps and games more efficiently but also in bringing more content, such as Movies and TV Shows into the fold. Services have also been revamped with Currents and Play Magazines merging to create the Play Newsstand and a whole raft of new Magazines being added. All-in-all, it’s finally starting to look like Apple might have something to worry about in Google Play, now all Google and their partners need to work out is how they can get more people creating true tablet experiences as there’s no denying the iPad has a better selection of tablets apps, which is a real shame with tablets like the Nexus 7 and Galaxy Note 10.1 – 2014 Edition out there.
