Top tweets of 2013 disclosed by Twitter

According to Twitter, Real Madrid knocking Manchester United out of the Champions League caused the biggest spike in users during the year.
Other events that caused a “surge” of Twitter use in the UK during 2013 included Andy Murray’s win at Wimbledon, Mumford and Sons playing at Glastonbury and New Year’s Eve.
According to Twitter, eight of the top ten Twitter “surges” were caused by sports fans. Aside from Murray’s win in the tennis, the others were all about Football.
“Football dominated the most-tweeted-about moments in terms of tweets-per-second,” said Lewis Wiltshire, head of media partnerships at Twitter UK.
“The natural way you react when you see a great goal is to grab your phone.”

Top retweets

Twitter also revealed the most retweeted tweets of the year.
Boy band One Direction ruled the top five, claiming three of the top spots. One of the tweets – from band member Niall – was shared 375,000 times.
The other two most retweeted tweets were more sombre, with the death of Glee star Cory Monteith – and the subsequent tweet by co-star and girlfriend Lea Michele – garnering 408,000 retweets.
More recently, the death of Fast and the Furious star Paul Walker saw 400,000 users retweet the news.
